About
Creola Katherine Johnson (1918β2020) was a pioneering American mathematician and NASA scientist whose orbital mechanics calculations at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, were critical to the success of early U.S. crewed spaceflights, including Alan Shepard's Freedom 7 and John Glenn's Friendship 7 flights, as well as the Apollo moon landing missions. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and featured in the book and film 'Hidden Figures', her legacy continues to be honored at NASA Langley's Katherine G. Johnson Computational Research Facility in Hampton.
