John Ronald Reuel Tolkien CBE FRSL (1892–1973) was an acclaimed English scholar, philologist, and author, best known as the creator of Middle-earth and writer of classic high-fantasy works including 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings'. A longtime resident of Oxford, he served as a professor of Anglo-Saxon and English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford. His literary legacy and copyright are managed by The Tolkien Estate.
