Alan Mathison Turing (1912–1954) was a pioneering English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, and cryptanalyst widely recognized as the father of modern theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. In Manchester, he served as Deputy Director of the Computing Machine Laboratory at the University of Manchester, where he wrote the programming manual for the Ferranti Mark 1, devised the Turing Test, and laid the foundations of modern software development and computation.
